Pharmacy education, training & pedagogy

Situated in one of the oldest schools of pharmacy in the UK our academics take leading role in developing undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacist education and training.

Our focus on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and stewardship (AMS) is driven by local, regional and national needs relating to AMR and AMS, underpinned by years of pedagogical and clinical experience and expertise in the area of infectious diseases and antimicrobial medicines optimisation.

As such, our academics were founding members of the NAPEG – the National Antimicrobial Stewardship Pharmacy Education Group.

Competent Pharmacists

Pharmacists of the future will play a leading role in optimising the use of antimicrobials – by directly prescribing and supplying these vital medicines; through to advising other clinicals, patients and the public.

Our research has identified a number gaps in education, training, and assessment relating to AMR and AMS. From this, we are addressing these gaps locally and nationally, sharing our best practice in pedagogy and working with schools of pharmacy and learned societies from across the UK.

Ongoing work

Our leadership and research in AMR and AMS education and training is aiming to highlight best-practice in teaching and assessment, to build competence and capability at all levels and sectors of practice.

Current work includes:

  • Development and evaluation of teaching and assessment methods on the MPharm
  • Embedding AMR and AMS education and assessment into placements
