Ryan is an Advanced Specialist Pharmacist in Antimicrobials in the NHS in Leicester, where he leads several antimicrobial stewardship initiatives and supports the wider stewardship agenda across Leicestershire.
As well driving antimicrobial stewardship within the NHS, Ryan leads and develops outreach initiatives that aim to improve the public’s understanding of antimicrobial resistance and stewardship. This has culminated in the development of an antibiotic stewardship programme for Scouting and Guiding groups across the UK – which won the Children and Family category at the 2018 Antibiotic Guardian Awards.
In 2017 he completed a PhD from Liverpool John Moores University’s School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences for a thesis entitled “The development and evaluation of antibacterial polymer-phyllosilicate composite systems for the treatment of infected wounds.” His research interests continue to focus on the use of antimicrobial agents both from a pharmaceutical perspective but also in clinical practice.
Ryan also sits on the Faculty and Education Board of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, which aims to develop strategy and policy regarding pharmacy education and training. He is also an Ambassador and honorary life member of the British Pharmaceutical Students’ Association.
